Three Suspected Raiders Killed in Turkana Villagers’ Shootout

Date:

TURKANA, Kenya – At least three suspected raiders were shot dead in a clash with villagers in Kalemng’orok, Turkana County, as armed locals defended themselves against a livestock theft attempt.

The incident occurred on Monday evening in Kang’imong’in, a sub-location within Kalemng’orok, and extended into Tuesday, according to police reports.

The raiders were reportedly targeting livestock when villagers, who are often armed for self-protection, confronted them, leading to a deadly shootout.

“Three of the attackers were neutralized during the exchange, while the rest of the gang fled the scene,” police said, adding that rapid response teams from various units were dispatched to the area amid fears of retaliatory attacks.

Some suspects were reportedly hiding near the Nauyaragai Bridge area before dispersing following police intervention.

The clash comes as part of ongoing security efforts under Operation Maliza Uhalifu, which targets banditry in counties including Turkana, Baringo, West Pokot, Samburu, Marsabit, Meru, and Isiolo.

The operation has reportedly managed to contain criminal activities despite persistent challenges in the region.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said the government’s long-term approach combines security measures with sustainable development, empowering communities to participate actively in curbing livestock theft while promoting legitimate livelihoods.

Plans include distributing subsidized agricultural inputs and providing extension services to residents to revive farming as a primary source of income.

“We are coming to dismantle not only the criminals themselves but also the entire chain behind the livestock rustling industry,” Murkomen said.

The CS also ordered fresh vetting of all National Police Reservists (NPRs) and announced a policy shift to bring them under the direct command of Officer Commanding Police Stations (OCS) to strengthen operational effectiveness.
