Tight Security as Ida Odinga Arrives in Bondo Ahead of Raila’s Burial

Date:

BONDO, Kenya — Mama Ida Odinga, the widow of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, made a sombre return to the family’s Opoda Farm in Bondo on Saturday, marking her first visit since her husband’s death earlier this week.

Her arrival, under tight security, drew hundreds of mourners who thronged the homestead to pay their respects to the family of the man who shaped Kenya’s political history for decades.

Security officers, including police and military personnel, were deployed to manage the swelling crowd outside the residence as emotional scenes unfolded.

Some mourners climbed trees and walls in a bid to catch a glimpse of Mama Ida, whose composure and quiet strength drew deep sympathy from onlookers.

Dressed in black attire and dark sunglasses, she was accompanied by her daughter, Winnie Odinga, and other close family members as they entered the compound.

Security officers swiftly closed the gates behind them, allowing the family a moment of privacy amid the overwhelming outpouring of grief.

Raila’s body, which has been lying in state at the Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium in Mamboleo, Kisumu, is expected to be airlifted to Bondo this evening ahead of a night vigil.

Thousands of Kenyans have been filing past his casket throughout the day in a final show of respect.

Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo confirmed that the body will be flown directly from Kisumu to Bondo, rather than transported by road as earlier planned, citing logistical and security considerations.

“The decision was reached after consultations with the National Funeral Steering Committee and the family to ensure a dignified and well-coordinated send-off for the late Prime Minister,” Omollo said.

Raila Odinga, a towering figure in Kenya’s struggle for democracy and a five-time presidential contender, is set to be buried on Sunday at his rural home.

The mood in Bondo — and across the country — remains one of profound grief and reflection on a life that left an indelible mark on the nation’s political landscape.
