WASHINGTON, United States — U.S. President Donald Trump has celebrated the retirement of Representative Nancy Pelosi, the trailblazing Democratic lawmaker and former Speaker of the House who presided over both of his impeachments, calling her exit “a great thing for America.”
In a statement posted on Truth Social on Friday, November 7, Trump launched a personal attack on Pelosi, accusing her of corruption and mocking her political career.
His remarks came shortly after the 85-year-old California Democrat announced that she would not seek re-election in 2026, marking the end of a congressional career that spanned more than three decades.
“The retirement of Nancy Pelosi is a great thing for America,” Trump said in a message shared with Fox News journalist Peter Doocy. “She was rapidly losing control of her party, and it was never coming back. I’m very honored that she impeached me twice and failed miserably twice. Nancy Pelosi is a highly overrated politician.”
Pelosi made history as the first woman to serve as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, a role she held twice — from 2007 to 2011 and again from 2019 to 2023.
During her leadership, she became one of the most powerful and polarizing figures in U.S. politics, guiding major legislative victories and facing fierce opposition from Republicans.
Her tenure was defined by landmark legislative achievements, including the passage of the Affordable Care Act under President Barack Obama and the Inflation Reduction Act under President Joe Biden.
She also led the House during the turbulent years of the Trump presidency, overseeing two impeachment trials — first in 2019 over abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, and again in 2021 for incitement of insurrection following the January 6 Capitol riot.
In a six-minute farewell video posted Thursday, Pelosi thanked her San Francisco constituents for their decades of support.
“Thank you, San Francisco, for trusting me to be your voice in Congress. May God bless you, and may God bless the United States of America,” she said.
Former President Joe Biden led tributes to Pelosi, describing her as “the best Speaker of the House in American history.”
“When I was President, we worked together to grow our economy, create millions of jobs, and make historic investments in our nation’s future,” Biden said in a post on X. “She has devoted much of her life to this country, and America will always be grateful.”
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries also lauded Pelosi’s two decades of leadership, noting her resilience through “a once-in-a-century pandemic, a horrific attack on the U.S. Capitol, and a violent attempt on her husband’s life.”
Pelosi, who held the honorary title of Speaker Emerita, is expected to continue playing an advisory role within the Democratic Party even as she steps away from public office, closing one of the most consequential chapters in modern American political history.
