U.S. Embassy Issues Statement Over Current Situation in Kenya

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – As Kenya enters the fifth week of widespread protests, the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi has issued a strong appeal for peace and restraint, highlighting the grave consequences of the ongoing unrest.

With over 50 protest-related deaths reported, the Embassy expressed deep concern over the escalating violence, including shootings and abductions of protestors and journalists.

In a statement released on July 18, 2024, the U.S. Embassy emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law and engaging constructively to resolve the crisis.

“We are deeply concerned by reports of violence,” the statement read. “Constructive engagement of citizens and civil society, aided by a free and independent media, is a pillar of democracy. These are values we share with Kenya and which we must all protect.”

The Embassy urged the police to exercise restraint and protect the rights of peaceful demonstrators. It also called on all parties involved, including provocateurs and opportunists, to avoid disruptive actions such as blocking roads and looting businesses.

“All actors – police and protesters alike – should repudiate violence and be held accountable for wrongdoing,” the statement urged.

Highlighting its long-standing partnership with Kenya, the U.S. Embassy commended the Kenyan government’s efforts to address public grievances and urged continued progress in promoting national unity and reconciliation.

The statement referenced the government’s recent reforms announced on July 18 as steps in the right direction.

“As both of our countries strive to build stronger democracies that deliver peace and prosperity for our citizens, this is an important moment for all Kenyans to demonstrate the democratic values we share,” the Embassy noted.
