U.S. Halts Federal Funding to South Africa, Offers Fast-Track Citizenship to Farmers

Date:

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The United States is cutting off all federal funding to South Africa, U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Friday.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump also pledged to expedite the relocation of South African farmers facing safety concerns, offering them a fast-tracked pathway to U.S. citizenship.

“To go a step further, any Farmer (with family!) from South Africa, seeking to flee that country for reasons of safety, will be invited into the United States of America with a rapid pathway to Citizenship,” Trump wrote.

He stated that the process would begin immediately.

The move signals a sharp policy shift in U.S.-South Africa relations.

In 2024, the U.S. allocated $323.4 million (Ksh.41.56 billion) in foreign assistance to South Africa, according to government data.

It remains unclear whether the funding cut applies to all aid programs, including health and development initiatives.

Trump’s announcement comes amid heightened diplomatic tensions between Washington and Pretoria.

The South African government has yet to issue an official response to the decision.
