Mohamud Makes Resolute Commitment to His Oath of Office as He Assumes EACC CEO Role

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya—The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) is experiencing a new dawn following the swearing-in of its newly appointed Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Abdi Ahmed Mohamud.

During his swearing-in ceremony before Chief Justice Martha Koome at the Supreme Court, Mohamud promised to commit unambiguously and faithfully to his oath of office.

Mohamud takes over from the former CEO, Twalib Mbarak, who exited the Commission on Friday, January 10, 2025, upon the expiry of his six-year term.

“I wish to offer my unequivocal commitment and fidelity to the oath of office that I subscribed to in combating corruption, economic crime, and unethical conduct in the country,” he said.

What EACC plans to do to tame runaway corruption in Kenya

He further stated that, whereas EACC will continue to enforce the law as mandated, in the future, it will prioritise tracing and recovering corruptly acquired assets, preventing corruption, and creating partnerships in the fight against corruption.

Mohamud said that he is acutely aware of the enormous responsibility and expectations that Kenyans bestow upon the Commission and is cognisant of the adverse effects of corruption on a nation’s well-being.

The immediate former deputy CEO further committed to reinvigorating existing anti-corruption strategies and enlisting the support and participation of key actors, especially the youth.

The ceremony was attended by senior EACC officials led by Chairperson Dr. David Oginde.

Also in attendance were the Chairperson of the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee of the National Assembly (JLAC), George Murugara; Director of Criminal Investigations, Mohamed Amin; Deputy Inspector General, Kenya Police Service, Eliud Lagat; and Alloys Kemo, acting Secretary of Public Prosecutions, representing the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Renson Igonga.

Mohamud is an advocate of the High Court of Kenya and a seasoned investigator with over 30 years of experience investigating corruption and other forms of economic crimes.

He started law enforcement in 1989 as a cadet inspector at the Kenya Police Service. In 2005, he joined the Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission (KACC), now EACC, as a senior officer in charge of the Rapid Response Division. He rose through the ranks to head the Directorate of Investigations.

Abdi Ahmed Mohamud’s career journey

Mohamud has undergone expansive training as a career detective in corruption and economic crimes, locally and internationally, with various distinguished law enforcement agencies.

As the Deputy Chief Executive Officer, he has deputised the Secretary/Chief Executive Officer of EACC in discharging his statutory, administrative, and policy responsibilities in the daily operations and management of the Commission.

As the head of the Directorate of Investigations, he was charged with managing and coordinating investigations, and he has been instrumental in investigating several high-profile cases in Kenya and beyond.

Due to his outstanding contribution to the enforcement sector, he was honoured with the Head of State Commendation, Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear (M.B.S.), in December 2016 for his essential role in the fight against corruption.

He holds a Master of Science Degree in Security and Risk Management from the University of Leicester, United Kingdom; a Bachelor of Laws Degree from Mt. Kenya University; and a Professional Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law.
