Kwale Hosts Day 2 of Jukwaa la Usalama as Murkomen Rallies Leaders Against Insecurity

Date:

KWALE, Kenya – Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen on Tuesday led the second day of the Jukwaa la Usalama Coast Region tour in Kwale County, where he called on local leaders and residents to join hands in the fight against insecurity and inefficiencies in public service delivery.

Speaking during a town hall meeting at the Kwale Cultural Centre, Murkomen emphasized the need for a coordinated, community-driven approach to tackle criminal gangs, drug abuse, and administrative lapses that continue to hamper progress in the coastal region.

The meeting brought together elected leaders, ministry officials, chiefs, assistant chiefs, security officers, civil society groups, youth representatives, and business stakeholders.

Discussions centred on ways to strengthen security, eradicate youth gangs such as the “Panga Boys”, and boost government service delivery.

Murkomen also urged collaboration among security agencies and community members, warning that political interference is enabling crime in the region.

He called for firm action against individuals believed to be sponsoring gangs and undermining law enforcement.

The CS reiterated that the government will work with the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to ensure the upcoming police recruitment process remains transparent and merit-based.

Among the leaders present were Kwale Governor Fatuma Achani, MPs Gonzi Rai (Kinango), Kassim Tandaza (Matuga), Woman Representative Fatuma Masito, Immigration and Citizen Services Principal Secretary Dr. Belio Kipsang, Coast Regional Commissioner Rhoda Onyancha, and Coast Regional Police Commander Ali Nuno.

Earlier in the day, Murkomen visited the Coast Regional Immigration Headquarters in Mombasa, where he noted the increased demand for immigration services.

He said plans are underway to expand office space in Mombasa and open a new immigration office in Malindi to ease access for residents of Kilifi and the greater North Coast.

In Kwale, the CS also conducted a spot check of the mobile ID registration centre in Matuga Sub-county, where he lauded the live capture system for improving efficiency in the issuance of national identity cards.

According to the ministry, over 300 such units have been deployed nationwide, significantly reducing processing times.

Plans are in place to roll out the system to all sub-counties by June this year.

The Jukwaa la Usalama series is part of a national tour by the Ministry of Interior and other government agencies aimed at improving service delivery and community engagement on security matters.
