Over Four Million Kenya Power Customers Update Token Meters Ahead of Deadline

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- In a massive push towards modernization, over four million Kenya Power prepaid customers have successfully updated their token meters, aligning with the company’s ambitious campaign to revamp 7.4 million meters by August 31st.

Kenya Power’s initiative, aptly named Update Token Meter Yako, has seen an impressive response, with 56pc of prepaid customers already onboard.

Eng. Rosemary Oduor, the General Manager for Commercial Services and Sales, expressed gratitude for the customer support, stating, “We thank all our customers for their support in this ongoing global exercise. So far, we are happy that over 56pc of all our prepaid customers have updated their meters so that they can continue to enjoy access to electricity.”

The campaign is a part of a global effort targeting all prepaid meters that use the Standard Transfer Specification (STS), a universal method ensuring the security of generated tokens.

Eng. Oduor explained the process: “Once a meter is scheduled, a customer receives an SMS notification, and thereafter, the update codes are sent to the customer upon purchasing their electricity tokens. Our customers are required to update their meters as soon as they receive their codes to continue enjoying access to electricity.”

The company has taken measures to address the remaining 200,000 customers in the coming days, ensuring no one is left out.

Eng. Oduor reassured customers that the update does not impact the cost of electricity or the rate at which tokens are consumed.

However, she advised customers to use any unutilized older tokens before updating their meters to avoid invalidation.

To facilitate a smooth update process, Kenya Power has provided multiple avenues for customers to access their codes. The *977# USSD code serves as a reliable backup for those who may have lost their SMS notifications.

“We have made sure that any prepaid customer can get their codes, even in cases where they have lost the SMS. By using our USSD code *977#, any customer can access their codes once their meter has been scheduled,” said Eng. Oduor.

In addition, Kenya Power leverages its social media pages to keep customers informed and assist with any queries, ensuring a seamless experience.

As the August 31st deadline approaches, Kenya Power urges all remaining customers to update their meters promptly to continue enjoying uninterrupted electricity services.
