NAIROBI, Kenya- Acting Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has issued a cautionary message to GenZ protesters, urging them to remain vigilant after receiving “credible intelligence” of planned infiltrations by criminal gangs.
In his statement, Kanja highlighted the potential threat these gangs pose to the safety of peaceful demonstrators.
Kanja did not provide specific details on the measures being taken to counteract the alleged criminal elements.
“Their plans could potentially jeopardize the safety of demonstrators,” Kanja said, stressing the importance of vigilance among the protesters.
At the time of his statement, Nairobi remained calm with no reported incidents.
However, tensions were already evident in other regions.
In Kitengela, protesters engaged in running battles with the police, while in Kericho and Kakamega Counties, armed goons were seen patrolling the streets, wielding large sticks.
The acting IG called for cooperation between the protesters and law enforcement to ensure the demonstrations remain peaceful and secure.
“We urge you to remain peaceful and vigilant. Please collaborate, cooperate, and coordinate with the police to ensure your safety and our collective security as Kenyans is guaranteed during the event,” Kanja urged.
In recent protests, criminal elements have often infiltrated the crowds, turning peaceful demonstrations into scenes of violence and property destruction.
This pattern has raised concerns among both the authorities and the public, making it crucial for the police and protesters to work together to prevent such incidents.
Human Rights defenders say the involvement of criminal gangs in these protests not only undermines the demonstrators’ cause but also poses significant risks to public safety.
