Deputy President Kindiki Calls for Modernized, Customer-Centric Tax Systems in Kenya

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has called on the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) to adopt innovative, taxpayer-friendly strategies to boost revenue collection, underscoring the role of taxes in fostering national development and economic stability.

Speaking at the 2024 Taxpayers’ Day held at State House, Nairobi, Kindiki urged KRA to streamline tax processes, making them accessible and customer-focused to enhance voluntary compliance.

“We must continuously innovate and adopt client-friendly revenue mobilization measures while ensuring the responsible management of resources collected from taxpayers,” he stated, noting the link between trust in tax systems and compliance.

Joined by President William Ruto, Kindiki also praised KRA’s achievements for the fiscal year 2023/2024, highlighting the agency’s onboarding of 1.2 million new taxpayers and the filing of over eight million returns—figures that demonstrate progress in widening Kenya’s tax base.

The Deputy President stressed that the government’s development agenda relies heavily on citizen contributions through taxes, reinforcing, “Every Kenyan has a duty to pay taxes for the advancement of our nation.”

The event also saw the launch of KRA’s Ninth Corporate Plan and a new Application Programming Interface (API) platform, both designed to improve compliance and efficiency in tax processing.

President Ruto echoed Kindiki’s sentiments, emphasizing that curbing tax evasion and corruption is crucial for Kenya’s development.

He encouraged citizens to report tax-related malpractices through the KRA’s anonymous iWhistle platform, citing the recent investigation of 255 KRA employees as evidence of the government’s commitment to accountability.

“Tax evaders should not be allowed to hide resources owed to Kenyans while benefiting from public services,” Ruto stated, calling for a national stand against corruption that threatens the country’s economic progress.
