This appointment, ratified on Monday during a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, follows the recent impeachment of former Deputy Party Leader Rigathi Gachagua, effectively ending his tenure in the role.
The party’s National Chairperson Cecily Mbarire confirmed the NEC’s decision, citing constitutional provisions under the Kenyan Constitution and UDA’s party guidelines as justification for Gachagua’s removal.
Mbarire noted that Gachagua’s inability to continue in his role came after both the National Assembly and Senate votes, together with Articles 75 (3) and 145 (7) of the Kenyan Constitution, provided for the cessation of his position.
“The National Executive Committee now resolves to designate H.E. Prof. Kithure Kindiki, EGH as the Deputy Party Leader of the United Democratic Alliance Party, effective immediately,” Mbarire announced.
In his acceptance speech, Kindiki expressed gratitude to UDA leadership and pledged his full support to President William Ruto’s agenda for the nation.
Emphasizing the need for a united country, Kindiki promised to work toward aligning the party’s goals with the broader aspirations of the Kenyan people.
“I will do the job I have been given by the party to help the President achieve the agenda of the party and all members,” Kindiki said.
He further acknowledged the gravity of the recent transitions within the party, calling them “momentous” and attributing his rise to the position to both the party’s confidence and constitutional processes.
Held at UDA’s Nairobi headquarters, the ceremony drew several senior party officials, including Acting Secretary General Hassan Omar and National Treasurer Japheth Nyakundi.
The party’s reorganization signals a consolidation of UDA’s leadership as it seeks to bolster internal cohesion and advance its political agenda in Kenya.
