NAIROBI, Kenya- Kenya is adjusting its budget calendar to allow Parliament to approve the 2027/28 Budget Estimates by March 31, 2027, months before the August General Election.
Treasury Principal Secretary Chris Kiptoo said the timeline would help maintain certainty and continuity in public service delivery as the country approaches the elections.
Kiptoo spoke while opening the FY 2027/28 and Medium-Term Budget Public Sector Hearings on behalf of Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi.
The event was also attended by Samuel Atandi, the National Assembly Finance and National Planning Committee chairperson.
Public invited to weigh in on budget
The hearings will run for three days, giving stakeholders and members of the public an opportunity to review sector proposals and make recommendations before the budget is finalised.
Kiptoo said public input would help strengthen the proposals as the government prepares its spending plans for the next financial year and medium-term period.
He also pointed to recent economic growth, saying Kenya’s economy expanded by an average of 5 per cent between 2022 and 2025, compared with global growth of 3.4 per cent and Sub-Saharan Africa’s 4.1 per cent.
The economy grew by 5.3 per cent in the first quarter of 2026, up from 4.9 per cent during the same period in 2025, he said.
Growth was supported by performance across key sectors.
The budget hearings form part of the preparation process for the 2027/28 estimates, which will guide government spending and priorities in the year leading up to the 2027 elections.
