Mandera Kicks off Countywide Livestock Vaccination Drive

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- Mandera County is taking a step toward safeguarding the livelihoods of its pastoral communities with the launch of a comprehensive livestock vaccination initiative.

Spearheaded by the Emergency Locust Response Project (ELRP) and the Food System Resilience Project (FSRP), this initiative aims to protect livestock from frequent disease outbreaks and enhance community resilience.

Veterinary officers are at the heart of this initiative, conducting essential activities to ensure livestock health.

These include the Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) vaccination, deworming, and implementing vector control measures like spraying livestock to ward off ticks and biting flies.

This multifaceted approach not only protects the animals but also secures the livelihoods of the pastoral communities dependent on them.

Community Sensitization and Participation

Beyond the vaccinations, community sensitization plays a crucial role. Veterinary officers are educating the public on preventive measures against zoonotic diseases, ensuring that the knowledge to protect livestock is widespread.

Dr. Rashid Ochola of Mandera West has urged the community to actively participate in vaccinating their animals, highlighting the importance of reducing disease prevalence.

This vaccination drive comes at a critical time for Mandera farmers. The region is still recovering from the devastating El Niño rains that swept away numerous livestock.

By focusing on disease prevention and livestock health, this initiative provides much-needed support to farmers striving to rebuild their herds and livelihoods.
