NAIROBI, Kenya- President William Ruto is travelling to Moscow for the Third Russia–Africa Economic and Humanitarian Forum, where Kenya will seek new export markets, investment and partnerships in technology and manufacturing.
The forum is scheduled for October 28 and 29. State House said Ruto’s agenda will include expanding access for Kenyan tea, coffee, cut flowers, fresh produce and value-added goods, as well as attracting investment in agro-processing, manufacturing, energy and infrastructure.
The President is also expected to promote Kenya as a gateway to African markets during the Africa–Russia Business Roundtable.
State House said the discussions would target joint ventures and commercial partnerships that could strengthen local industries, create jobs and increase the value of Kenyan exports.
Other areas on Kenya’s agenda include artificial intelligence, digital innovation and technology transfer.
The government said it would seek partnerships to build young people’s skills, support businesses and grow the digital economy.
Ruto is also expected to discuss access to affordable agricultural inputs and food security.
Ruto’s return after skipping 2023 summit
Ruto’s attendance marks a change from 2023, when he did not attend the second Russia–Africa Summit in St Petersburg.
Kenya was represented by African Union organs.
The 2023 decision came while Russia’s war in Ukraine was a major issue in international diplomacy.
However, State House’s explanation at the time was that Kenya’s approach aligned with the African Union’s position that externally organised partnership summits should be reviewed to establish an effective framework for AU partnerships.
Ruto has previously said Kenya’s position on the conflict is grounded in respect for the territorial integrity of states and the United Nations Charter.
His government has also raised concerns about the war’s effects on food prices and security.
Kenya to raise trade and investment priorities
The Moscow visit comes as Kenya seeks to broaden export destinations and attract capital for projects that can support economic growth and employment.
State House said Ruto will hold meetings on the sidelines with heads of state and government, international organisations, financial institutions and major companies.
The forum will also address African priorities including global governance reforms, stronger representation in international decision-making and partnerships based on mutual respect and sovereign equality.
Participants are expected to discuss industrialisation, economic transformation, regional security and peaceful resolution of conflicts.
State House said Africa would engage Russia on global peace and regional security, alongside trade and investment.
