“I Do Know His Wife”: Babu Owino Shares What Led to Robert Alai Confrontation At City Restaurant

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 4 — Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has firmly refuted claims made by Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai that he was behind alleged social media attacks on Alai’s wife, describing the accusation as false and baseless.

In a statement, Owino said the claims sparked a confrontation on Saturday afternoon at a restaurant along Lenana Road, Kilimani, where he had gone for a private meeting with a senior clergyman.

“I do not know his wife, I have never wronged her, and I have no reason whatsoever to involve innocent family members in politics,” Owino stated.

“It is not my style to advance my politics by attacking women. I hold out respected ladies in the highest regard.”

Incident Escalation

Owino said the encounter turned physical when Alai pushed him, drew a pistol, and struck him on the chest and jaw, and later poured water on his face.

According to Owino, these actions were unprovoked and occurred in full view of other patrons.

The legislator emphasized that his calm demeanor should not be mistaken for fear, highlighting that he has always refrained from targeting women in political disputes.

Political Intimidation Context

Owino linked the incident to what he called a pattern of harassment following the death of ODM leader Raila Odinga.

He cited a previous attack in Siaya County during Raila’s burial, describing it as part of the same campaign of intimidation against him.

“Some of us have come a long way and know better. However, our calm should never be mistaken for fear. We will always stand our ground in defence of our lives, our dignity, and the rule of law,” he said.

Owino reported the Kilimani restaurant incident at Kilimani Police Station, calling on authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and take appropriate action.

The Embakasi East legislator is seeking to unseat John Sakaja as Governor of Nairobi County in 2027.
