EMBU, Kenya- Former Chief Justice and United Green Movement (UGM) presidential candidate David Maraga has strongly condemned what he described as rising cases of police brutality at political rallies, accusing security agencies of using excessive force against opposition supporters and innocent civilians.
Speaking in Embu while campaigning for UGM Evurore Ward candidate Kennedy Njeru, Maraga said the use of force against peaceful citizens is illegal and undermines democracy.
He cited a recent opposition rally organized by the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, where police allegedly used excessive force on civilians, resulting in a fatality.
He also criticized an incident in Nyeri where worshippers, including children, were dispersed by police.
Maraga vowed that if elected president, he would end police impunity and ensure accountability for officers who violate the law.
The UGM leader also urged Kenyan youth to register as voters in large numbers ahead of the 2027 general election, arguing that young people hold the key to transforming the country’s leadership.
He said that with the majority of Kenya’s population under 35, the youth have the power to reshape the nation’s future through the ballot.
Maraga criticized the current administration under President William Ruto, accusing it of poor governance and warning against the sale of government parastatal shares to foreign investors.
He argued that selling strategic national assets cheaply could compromise Kenya’s economic independence and data security.
Maraga also dismissed claims that he is secretly working with the Government and that UGM Candidate for Evurore Ward, Kennedy Njeru is not a Government Project.
“I have also heard people spreading propaganda that our candidate for Evurore Kennedy Njeru is a Government Project. That is not true. How canwe be working with the same Government we are condemning?” he posed.
He further hinted at the possibility of UGM collaborating with other opposition groups in the future, noting that they share similar positions on governance and accountability.
Kennedy Njeru pledged to prioritize infrastructure, water access, youth employment, and the protection of Muguka and miraa farmers if elected as Evurore Member of County Assembly.
He echoed Maraga’s call for youth voter registration, encouraging young people to shape the country’s leadership actively.
In the Evurore Ward race, Njeru will face competitors including Duncan Muratia of the United Democratic Alliance, Albert Kigoro of the Democratic Party, and Martin Mukundi alias ‘Mkombozi’ from Mike Sonko’s National Economic Development Party (NEDP).
Other aspirants, including candidates linked to Martha Karua’s People’s Liberation Party and Moses Kuria’s Chama Cha Kazi, have withdrawn from the contest.
