Kenya, South Sudan Discuss Strengthening Trade and Economic Cooperation

Date:

NAIROBI, KENYA- Kenya and South Sudan are exploring ways to deepen trade ties and enhance economic cooperation, following a meeting between Trade Cabinet Secretary Lee Kinyanjui and a delegation from South Sudan led by Minister for Trade and Industry Hon. Atong Kuol Juuk.

During the discussions, CS Kinyanjui highlighted the importance of building on the countries’ historical ties, particularly in peacekeeping, and emphasized the mutual benefits of closer trade engagement.

Both sides discussed the formation of a Joint Trade Commission to address bottlenecks that currently hinder trade, including challenges posed by insecurity, which affects the free movement of goods and people.

The South Sudan delegation conducted a fact-finding mission to Kenya to explore ways of easing the movement of goods through the Northern Corridor, including the Port of Mombasa and the Nairobi Inland Container Depot.

CS Kinyanjui affirmed Kenya’s commitment to supporting joint initiatives that improve cross-border trade, streamline logistics, and reduce border delays.

The partnership will also include knowledge sharing and capacity building, particularly in customs and trade facilitation, to strengthen the countries’ shared economic future.
