NAIROBI, Kenya- Motorists using Mombasa Road have been advised to prepare for traffic disruption following the planned partial closure of a section near Cabanas for more than one month.
The Kenya National Highways Authority said the affected section is located at the Eastern Bypass off-ramp connecting to the JKIA-bound carriageway of Mombasa Road.
The partial closure will begin on Thursday, September 17, and remain in place until Thursday, October 22, 2026.
KeNHA said the temporary traffic disruption would allow the construction of a box drain along the affected road section.
“All motorists intending to use Mombasa Road, JKIA-bound, from Eastern Bypass will use the provided diversion lane,” the authority said in a public notice.
Drivers have been directed to follow instructions issued by traffic marshals deployed at the site to minimise congestion and ensure compliance with road safety measures.
The authority also urged motorists to observe the proposed traffic management plan and cooperate with police officers and traffic marshals throughout the construction period.
Normal traffic operations will resume after the drainage works are completed.
The affected interchange is an important connection for motorists travelling from the Eastern Bypass towards Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and Nairobi through Mombasa Road.
The partial closure could affect motorists travelling to the airport and those accessing businesses, residential estates and industrial areas along the busy highway.
Road users have been encouraged to plan their journeys in advance and allow additional travel time, particularly during morning and evening peak hours.
KeNHA Director-General Luka Kimeli said the authority would work to minimise disruption while ensuring the construction work is completed safely.
