NAIROBI, Kenya – Thousands of Nairobi residents and businesses in some of the city’s busiest neighbourhoods are set to experience a 24-hour water supply interruption beginning Monday, November 9, as Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company undertakes planned works on the Kabete distribution mains.
The shutdown, scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m. on Monday and end at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 10, will affect residential estates, commercial districts and several major health facilities across Nairobi.
In a public notice, Nairobi Water said the interruption is necessary to facilitate the installation of new pipe connections near Kianda School, off Waiyaki Way.
The company said the works are intended to improve the reliability of water supply in the affected areas.
Hospitals and major institutions among those affected
The disruption will extend beyond residential neighbourhoods to several hospitals and public institutions, potentially affecting their daily operations during the maintenance period.
Facilities named in the notice include Kenyatta National Hospital, Nairobi Hospital, Forces Memorial Hospital and Mbagathi Hospital.
Other affected institutions and locations include KEMRI flats, the Department of Defence (DOD), Uhuru Park and areas around the Dog Unit in Langata.
Residents of Westlands, Riverside and Parklands will also experience the interruption, alongside customers in Kilimani, Kileleshwa, Lavington, Upper Hill, Lower Hill and Madaraka.
Kibera, Langata and Ngong Road areas listed
In the southern part of the city, the shutdown will affect Kibera, Jamhuri, Dog Unit-Langata and the Langata Women’s Prison area.
Other neighbourhoods listed by Nairobi Water include Amboseli, Hatheru, Chalbi, Kenya High, Woodley and areas along Ngong Road.
The utility said customers in all the listed locations and their surrounding areas should prepare for the interruption.
Residents urged to store water
Nairobi Water has advised households and businesses to use available water sparingly during the shutdown.
Customers are therefore encouraged to store sufficient water ahead of Monday morning, particularly for essential domestic and commercial needs.
The company apologised for the inconvenience and said the pipe connection works were necessary to improve service reliability.
