NAIROBI, Kenya – Spanish football has been plunged into mourning following the death of CD Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel, who succumbed to injuries sustained in a dramatic collision during a league match against FC Andorra.
The 30-year-old died at 8:00am local time on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, a day after the incident at Tenerife’s Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López, his club confirmed.
De Miguel was involved in a heavy collision with Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono in the closing moments of Monday’s Spanish second-division encounter, which was level at 2-2.
Owono had rushed out to intercept a long ball when his knee struck the Tenerife forward. De Miguel collapsed and remained motionless as medical personnel rushed onto the pitch to attend to him.
The striker received emergency treatment for several minutes before being taken to hospital by ambulance. The referee showed Owono a straight red card before abandoning the match to allow medical teams to attend to the injured player.
Spanish media reported that De Miguel suffered a cardiac arrest while being transported to hospital and was resuscitated by paramedics.
Tenerife initially described his condition as serious but stable. However, the club issued a further update early Tuesday morning saying his neurological condition had deteriorated.
The club later announced his death in an emotional statement, expressing solidarity with his family, friends, teammates and supporters.
“Heartbroken, with a lump in our throats and unable to believe this is true, CD Tenerife announces the tragic death of Jesús de Miguel Alameda,” the club said.
It added that the player’s family had thanked those who had sent messages of support while asking for privacy during their period of grief.
FC Andorra, the club involved in Monday’s match, also expressed its condolences, saying it stood with De Miguel’s family, friends and Tenerife following the tragedy.
Gerard Piqué, the former Barcelona defender and co-owner of Andorra, paid tribute to the striker, saying he was deeply sorry for the loss.
Other Spanish clubs, including Castellón, where De Miguel previously played, also joined the tributes.
A career built across Spanish football
Born in Madrid, De Miguel began his senior career at Leganés in 2015 before moving through several Spanish clubs, including Lugo Fuenlabrada, Internacional Madrid, Unión Adarve, Navalcarnero and Unionistas.
He joined Castellón in 2023 and played an important role in the club’s promotion to Spain’s second division, scoring 16 goals during that campaign.
The forward moved to Tenerife in 2025 on a three-year contract. He scored 11 goals in 29 appearances for the club, according to the figures provided by Tenerife’s season record.
His death has left teammates and supporters mourning a player whose career had taken him through several levels of Spanish football before his move to Tenerife.
The tragedy has also renewed attention on the risks of serious on-field collisions, with Monday’s match ending in distress as players from both teams watched medical staff fight to save the striker.
