NAIROBI, Kenya – Detectives are pursuing a gang that attacked two police officers on patrol in Ruai, Nairobi, and escaped with two loaded AK-47 rifles in an incident that has triggered heightened security concerns.
The officers were conducting beat duties within Ruai Sub-County at around 1am on Tuesday, November 3, when they were reportedly ambushed by a group of assailants travelling on motorcycles.
A police security alert circulated to officers said both officers sustained serious injuries, including deep cuts to the back of their heads and injuries to their hands.
The officers were rushed to Reale Hospital in Utawala for treatment. One was reportedly unresponsive when assessed at the facility, while the other remained responsive.
Preliminary information in the alert suggested that the attackers may have used a sharp object during the assault.
The gang escaped with two police AK-47 rifles, each reportedly loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition.
The theft has raised concern among security teams because the weapons could pose a danger if they fall into the hands of criminal networks.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations office in Ruai is handling investigations, while officers on the ground are pursuing leads to recover the firearms and identify those behind the attack.
The alert urged officers to remain vigilant during patrols and report suspicious activity that could assist the ongoing operation.
The motive behind the attack had not been established by the time of publication.
The incident adds to security concerns surrounding attacks on police officers and the theft of firearms. In a separate case reported in August, detectives recovered an AK-47 stolen from an officer in Mavoko in 2025 after a shootout in Machakos County.
Investigations into the Ruai attack are ongoing.
