NAIROBI, Kenya- DCP Leader Rigathi Gachagua, Jubilee Party Leader Fred Matiang’i and Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka held an early-Sunday meeting, adding fresh momentum to opposition consultations ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The three leaders met as political parties and opposition formations continue to negotiate how to build a broad front capable of mounting a credible challenge to President William Ruto’s administration.
The encounter brings together three key players who have recently been linked to separate but overlapping efforts to unite opposition forces.
Talks follow public differences
The meeting comes days after a public exchange between Gachagua and Matiang’i over the shape and leadership of the opposition movement.
Gachagua had proposed a political arrangement centred on DCP, Kalonzo’s Wiper Patriotic Front and the Linda Mwananchi Movement led by Edwin Sifuna, arguing that the combination could form the backbone of an alternative government.
Matiang’i, however, cautioned against an approach that appears to reduce national politics to regional voting blocs.
He has maintained that the opposition must adopt an inclusive process that brings all players on board before settling on a presidential candidate.
The Jubilee Party leader has also said he would support a single opposition candidate if the choice is reached through an agreed, respectful and inclusive process.
Sunday’s meeting therefore presents an opportunity for the leaders to manage the emerging differences and keep channels of communication open as negotiations intensify.
Kalonzo’s alliance move
Kalonzo has in recent days taken steps to strengthen the Ukombozi Alliance, naming Matiang’i and Siaya Governor James Orengo to lead its council.
The Wiper leader said the appointments were part of a wider push to create a “super alliance” that would bring together opposition leaders ahead of the 2027 election.
That development places Matiang’i at the centre of Kalonzo’s political structure, while Gachagua continues to lead DCP’s mobilisation in Mt Kenya and other regions.
The early-Sunday talks could therefore be significant in determining whether the parties pursue parallel political structures or agree on a common framework that accommodates the country’s leading opposition figures.
Focus shifts to a common candidate
The central challenge facing the opposition remains the selection of one presidential candidate to face President Ruto in 2027.
Besides Gachagua, Kalonzo and Matiang’i, other leaders expected to influence those negotiations include People’s Liberation Party Leader Martha Karua, DAP-K Leader Eugene Wamalwa, Democratic Party Leader Justin Muturi, People’s Party of Kenya Leader Ndindi Nyoro and LMM Leader Edwin Sifuna.
While leaders have repeatedly spoken of unity, no agreed formula has been announced for selecting a flagbearer, sharing coalition positions or coordinating campaigns across the country.
The Gachagua-Matiang’i-Kalonzo meeting comes on the same day Gachagua and Kalonzo are expected to join other opposition leaders for the Ukombozi Rally in Kitengela, Kajiado County.
For now, the meeting signals that despite recent friction, the leaders remain engaged in conversations that could shape the opposition’s 2027 strategy.
The next major test will be whether the consultations produce an inclusive political framework and a clear timetable for identifying a joint candidate.
