Police Inspector Kenneth Sang Charged With Murder of Dr Victoria Mutiso

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- Police Inspector Kenneth Kipkemboi Sang has been charged with the murder of Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso, who was shot dead in Nairobi on July 29, 2026.

Sang appeared before Milimani High Court Judge Alexander Muteti on Tuesday, where he denied the murder charge.

According to the charge particulars, the prosecution alleges that Sang, jointly with other persons not before the court, unlawfully caused Dr Mutiso’s death at about 9.30am along Mawensi Road in Kilimani Sub-County, Nairobi.

The charge relates to the fatal shooting of Dr Mutiso, whose killing prompted a major investigation involving several suspects.

State to oppose bail

Senior Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Victor Owiti told the court that the State would oppose Sang’s release on bail.

The prosecution said it would file an affidavit setting out the grounds on which it intends to oppose his application for bond.

Sang was remanded at Industrial Area Remand Prison pending further directions on the bail application. The case will be mentioned on November 30, 2026.

The court will consider the prosecution’s reasons for opposing bail, as well as any response by the defence, before making a determination on whether the accused will be released pending trial.

Arrest followed Eldoret operation

Sang was arrested in Eldoret last month following an operation by detectives investigating the killings of Dr Mutiso and Nairobi lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu.

However, the charge read before Justice Muteti on Tuesday concerns only the death of Dr Mutiso.

Before the plea-taking, detectives had sought time to complete investigations, including recording statements, conducting searches, pursuing possible recoveries and carrying out other inquiries.

The DPP now alleges that Sang was involved in the killing of Dr Mutiso alongside other people who have not been arraigned with him in the current proceedings.

Several other suspects have previously been charged in connection with Dr Mutiso’s murder, as investigations into the circumstances of her death continue.

Trial process begins

Sang’s not-guilty plea sets the stage for the murder case to proceed through the High Court.

The prosecution will be required to present evidence to support the allegation that Sang participated in the killing, while the defence will have an opportunity to challenge the case.

The November 30 mention is expected to provide further directions on the bail application and the next steps in the case.
