NAIVASHA, Kenya – The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has released a detailed update on investigations into the fatal road accident that claimed the life of former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo, shedding new light on the sequence of events leading to the crash.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, December 16, the DCI said preliminary findings show that the accident involved Jirongo’s motor vehicle, registration number KCZ 305U, and a Climax Company Ltd public service vehicle (PSV) bus, registration number KCU 576A.
Jirongo died on December 13 following a head-on collision with a passenger bus along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway at Karai area in Naivasha.
According to preliminary investigations, the crash occurred at about 2:19am when Jirongo’s Mercedes-Benz collided with a Busia-bound bus operated by Climax Company Ltd.
The impact hurled Jirongo’s car about 25 metres from the point of collision, while the bus came to rest roughly 50 metres away.
The bus driver, Tyrus Kamau Githinji, told investigators that Jirongo’s vehicle entered the highway on the wrong lane after exiting a nearby petrol station.
He said he initially attempted to swerve to avoid a head-on collision but abandoned the manoeuvre when the bus showed signs of rolling over. The bus was carrying 65 passengers at the time.
A combined team of homicide detectives and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory was dispatched to the scene to document evidence.
Investigators also secured CCTV footage from the Eagol Petrol Station near the crash site.
The footage shows that Jirongo drove into the petrol station from the Nairobi direction at 2:18:40am, did not refuel, and exited at 2:19:19am, turning back towards Nairobi.
Just seconds later, at 2:19:25am, his vehicle collided head-on with the oncoming bus.
The bus driver has recorded a statement at the Naivasha Traffic Base and was released on cash bail pending further investigations.
He is expected to report back on December 22, 2025, as police probe the offence of causing death by dangerous driving.
Investigators have also interviewed the petrol station’s night guard and fuel attendant, while plans are underway to record statements from bus passengers.
Forensic experts are set to revisit the scene as detectives attempt to reconstruct Jirongo’s final movements.
Once investigations are complete, a comprehensive file will be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for further direction.
The DCI reiterated its commitment to a thorough and impartial probe, offering condolences to Jirongo’s family and assuring the public that the matter will be handled in line with the Constitution and the rule of law.
An autopsy on Jirongo’s body is scheduled for Wednesday, December 17, 2025.
