Meteorology Department Issues Heavy Rainfall Advisory Across Kenya

NAIROBI, Kenya — The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued a heavy rainfall advisory for several regions across the country, warning of moderate to heavy showers expected from 21st to 25th February 2026.

According to an advisory seen by Y News, current rains affecting the Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, and Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley (including Nairobi) are expected to intensify over the next few days. 

Rainfall is projected to exceed 20 mm in 24 hours on 21st February and 30 mm in 24 hours on 22nd, 23rd, and 24th February.

Intensity is expected to decrease by 25th February 2026.

The advisory also highlights a potential spread of rain to the South-eastern Lowlands and Coastal region, particularly the South Coast.

The weatherman has urged residents in affected areas to remain vigilant and take precautions against flooding, landslides, and disruptions to travel.

Counties likely to be affected include: Migori, Nyamira, Bungoma, Kakamega, Embu, Murang’a, Nyeri, Tharaka-Nithi, Kisii, Narok, Kajiado, Makueni, Machakos, Nairobi, Kericho, Bomet, Taita Taveta, Kitui, Kwale, Mombasa, southern Tana River, and parts of Kilifi.

The Meteorology Department has emphasized that the probability of heavy rainfall is moderate (33%–66%), urging communities and authorities to stay alert and implement safety measures.
