NAIROBI, Kenya – Kenyan entrepreneur and content creator Dora Obwaka, popularly known as Jesus Girl, has marked three years of sobriety, reflecting on the difficult decision that changed the direction of her life.
Obwaka shared the milestone on Thursday, August 27, 2026, revealing that she officially marked three years sober on August 18. She said she initially hesitated to make the deeply personal journey public but eventually decided to share it in the hope that her experience could encourage someone facing a similar struggle.
“Celebrating 3 Years Sober!! (18 August),” Obwaka wrote.
The milestone adds another chapter to a recovery journey she has previously discussed publicly, including her battle with alcohol and substance addiction.
Obwaka admitted that she did not immediately know whether she wanted to tell her followers about the anniversary.
She said she had recorded a message several days before posting it but spent time considering the consequences of sharing such a personal part of her life publicly.
“I recorded this a few days ago and contemplated whether I would post or not,” she said.
Ultimately, she decided that the possibility of helping another person outweighed her reservations.
“For the sake of someone who is in the position I was then and may benefit from hearing this, I decided to go ahead and share this very personal lesson.”
Looking back at the past three years, Obwaka said she remains grateful that she made the difficult decision to leave behind a lifestyle that had become familiar.
She acknowledged that stepping into an uncertain future was uncomfortable but said the decision ultimately transformed her life.
“Looking back, I’m so glad I stepped away from what felt familiar and good into the unknown because three years later my life has completely changed because of that one uncomfortable decision!”
The entrepreneur concluded her message with a simple encouragement to her followers:
“Love & Light!”
Obwaka has previously spoken openly about her struggles with alcohol and substance addiction.
She has said her journey with substance use began when she was 17 years old and eventually developed into an addiction that lasted about seven years. Her previous accounts have detailed how her substance use progressed from alcohol and cigarettes to marijuana and stronger substances.
The addiction affected different areas of her life, including her relationships, education and wellbeing. She eventually sought professional help and entered Teen Challenge, a faith-based rehabilitation programme, in November 2018.
Obwaka has credited her family, faith and changes in her environment and relationships among the factors that supported her recovery. Her experience has since become an important part of the story she tells about her life.
Following her recovery, Obwaka became popularly known as Jesus Girl, reflecting the central role Christianity plays in her life. She has since used her public platform to speak about addiction and recovery while encouraging people struggling with substance use and their families.
