DCP Accuses Police of Orchestrating Violence Ahead of Narok By-Elections

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) has accused the National Police Service of orchestrating violence against its supporters in Narok Town, ahead of the 27th November by-elections.

In a letter to Inspector General Douglas Kanja, DCP Party Leader Rigathi Gachagua claimed that police officers, including members of the Rapid Deployment Unit, acted in coordination with state-backed militias to disrupt a party meeting for Narok Town Ward candidate Douglas Masikonde on 24th November.

According to Gachagua, highways into and out of Narok Town were blocked on orders of the police, while women, children, and traders were allegedly “clobbered to the ground” and tear-gassed during the incident.

He also accused two officers attached to Murang’a County Woman Representative Betty Maina of publicly directing senior police officers and coordinating the violence.

“These same officers allegedly coordinated attacks on leaders and journalists in Murang’a earlier this year, including assaults on Senator John Methu in July and journalist Muthoni Wa Kirumba in November,” Gachagua said in the letter, urging the Inspector General to take immediate action.

The DCP leader further warned that any violence during the upcoming by-elections would be the direct responsibility of the police leadership if left unaddressed.

He demanded the immediate withdrawal of the two officers allegedly involved and suggested that Inspector General Kanja resign if he cannot control the police service.
