Ol Kalou By-Election: Hooded Armed Men Ambush DCP Convoy Near Gilgil

Date:

NAKURU, Kenya- A campaign truck belonging to the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) was set on fire after it was attacked by armed individuals near Pembroke Bridge in Gilgil during a civic education exercise, according to the party and witnesses.

The truck came under attack while conducting civic education activities ahead of the July 16 Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election.

The attackers fired tear gas canisters at the vehicle, forcing the driver to flee. The assailants then pursued the truck until it became stuck before setting it ablaze. The fire was, however, put out.

DCP said it could not account for the whereabouts of the truck driver after the incident. Other members of the campaign team escaped on foot amid what it described as gunfire.

The latest allegations come amid heightened political tensions surrounding the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) warned that persistent violence, voter bribery, destruction of campaign materials and other breaches of the Electoral Code of Conduct could jeopardise the conduct of the poll.

The by-election has seen a series of accusations and counter-accusations between the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and the opposition-backed DCP, with both sides raising concerns over security and the conduct of campaigns.
