NAIROBI, Kenya-The Equitable Party has notified members and the public of plans to change its name to Linda Mwananchi Movement, alongside proposed changes to its constitution, colours, headquarters and symbol.
In a public notice, the party said the changes followed a National Executive Committee meeting held on October 8.
The notice did not name the proposed colours or symbol, identify the new headquarters, or detail the planned constitutional amendments.
The rebrand would formally align the party’s identity with Linda Mwananchi, the political movement associated with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and his allies.
Sifuna was unveiled as the leader of The Equitable Party at its launch in Nairobi on October 4.
The proposed name has already been reserved by the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties for 90 days.
The reservation followed a ruling by the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal directing the Registrar to reconsider an earlier decision rejecting the name.
A reservation allows the party to pursue the name but does not, by itself, complete the change.
Under the Political Parties Act, a fully registered party seeking to change its name, constitution, symbol or colours must notify the Registrar.
The Registrar is required to publish notice of the proposed changes in the Kenya Gazette within 14 days.
The party may effect the changes after 30 days, taking into account any public representations received.
The party’s notice marks a further step in the transition from The Equitable Party to the Linda Mwananchi identity ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The changes will take effect through the formal process set out in law.
