NAIROBI, Kenya- Former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo has renewed calls for accountability over the death of 12-year-old Bridgit Njoki Wainaina, who was fatally shot inside her home during the 2025 Saba Saba protests, saying Kenya must end the cycle of impunity surrounding police killings.
In a statement marking one year since the tragedy, Odhiambo said Bridgit’s family continues to wait for answers over who fired the fatal shot and why no one has been held accountable.
“One year since 12-year-old Bridgit Njoki Wainaina was shot and killed inside her own home during the 2025 Saba Saba protests, her family is still asking the most basic question in any constitutional democracy. Who pulled the trigger, and who will be held to account?” she said.
Odhiambo said she stood in solidarity with Bridgit’s family, friends and classmates, as well as all victims of alleged police brutality whose cases, she said, have been delayed or ignored.
“I stand with Bridgit’s family, friends, classmates and every victim of police brutality whose pain has been normalised and whose cases have been delayed, diluted or ignored,” she said.
She argued that Kenyans should never again lose their lives at the hands of security officers while exercising their constitutional rights.
“Never again shall Kenyans be killed by trigger-happy officers for expressing their rights on the streets,” Odhiambo stated.
Calls for Accountability
The former LSK president said the Constitution guarantees the right to life, peaceful assembly and equal protection under the law, adding that state agencies have a duty to ensure those rights are protected.
“The Constitution does not permit stray bullets and unknown officers. It demands truth, individual responsibility and institutional reform,” she said.
Odhiambo called on the Inspector General of Police, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) to account for all deaths linked to the protests.
She urged the institutions to publish the status of investigations into police killings and expedite prosecutions against officers found responsible for excessive or unlawful use of force.
“I call upon the IG, IPOA and the ODPP to account for every life lost during the protests, publish the status of all investigations involving police killings, and prioritise charges against officers implicated in excessive and lethal force,” she said.
‘Justice for Bridgit Is Justice for Every Kenyan’
Odhiambo maintained that justice for Bridgit would represent justice for all Kenyans who have lost their lives during demonstrations.
“Justice for Bridgit is justice for every Kenyan who has paid with blood for daring to speak,” she said.
She also assured Bridgit’s family that they had not been forgotten.
“To Bridgit’s family, you are not alone. We will continue to memorialise her and insist that reparations for victims carry the same weight as consequences for perpetrators,” she said.
Odhiambo concluded by urging the country to confront what she described as a choice between impunity and accountability.
“Kenya must choose – impunity or a future where no parent has to bury a child because an officer treated a protest as war,” she said.
Njoki’s death became one of the most widely cited cases arising from the 2025 Saba Saba protests, with human rights organisations repeatedly calling for a transparent investigation and accountability for those responsible.
