Gachagua Demands IG Kanja’s Resignation After Violent Clashes in Narok

Date:

NAROK, Kenya — Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has called for the resignation of Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, accusing him of failing to prevent what he termed as orchestrated violence against opposition supporters during clashes in Narok on Monday.

In a letter issued Tuesday, Gachagua challenged the police chief to “do the honourable thing and resign,” claiming that the events in Narok exposed a breakdown in command and a misuse of police resources for political ends.

“If you are not in full control of the Police Service, kindly do the honourable thing and resign,” Gachagua said, asserting that police deployment in Narok was aimed at disrupting his mobilisation efforts in the area.

Violence erupted in Narok Town after large numbers of police officers were deployed, allegedly to contain Gachagua’s campaign activities. The former Deputy President insisted the operation was politically instigated and designed to intimidate his supporters.

Gachagua further alleged that the presence of armed officers in the town was linked to Murang’a Woman Representative Betty Maina, accusing her of influencing police operations outside her jurisdiction.

“Mr Kanja, you are aware that the two police officers attached to the Murang’a Woman Representative were deployed to Narok yesterday and they were seen publicly issuing instructions to police officers and coordinating the Narok violence,” he claimed, offering no additional evidence to substantiate the allegation.

Gachagua’s demand adds to rising political tensions as opposition leaders continue to accuse the government of weaponising security agencies to stifle dissent — claims the administration has consistently denied.

The matter is expected to spark further debate over police independence and accountability, particularly as political activities intensify across the country.
