NAIROBI, Kenya- Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has congratulated Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru following his swearing-in as the Member of Parliament for Ol Kalou Constituency, describing the victory as the beginning of a wider political journey for the party.
In a statement after Waweru took the oath of office at Parliament Buildings, Gachagua urged the new MP to move quickly from campaign politics to serving residents of Ol Kalou.
“Campaigns and celebrations are now over and it is time to work. Always remember to listen to your people; the people who elected you,” Gachagua said.
The former Deputy President praised Waweru’s victory in the closely contested Ol Kalou by-election, saying he had secured a decisive mandate despite what he termed a government-backed campaign.
Gachagua alleged that the government deployed billions of shillings through projects and cash handouts to influence voters during the by-election.
“I salute the great people of Ol Kalou for rejecting bribes and intimidation to give our party, DCP, our first-born Member of the National Assembly,” he said.
Waweru, who ran on the DCP ticket, defeated United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Samuel Muchina Nyagah in the July 2026 Ol Kalou by-election, in a contest that attracted national attention ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The victory marked DCP’s entry into the National Assembly and was celebrated by party supporters as a major political breakthrough for Gachagua’s outfit.
Gachagua said the win represented the first step towards building DCP into a national political force capable of taking control of key elective positions in the country.
“This victory is the first step in our journey towards creating a huge political party that will form the 6th Administration,” he said.
He further outlined the party’s ambitions to become the dominant force in Parliament, the Senate, the Council of Governors and county assemblies.
“The DCP Party is the party of the moment and the future, which is Green. As we embark on the Green Revolution, we remain focused and determined to be the majority party,” Gachagua said.
The DCP leader also expressed confidence in Waweru’s ability to represent Ol Kalou, citing his previous working relationship with the MP-elect when he served in government.
“I have no doubt in my mind that you will not disappoint your constituents, having worked with me when you served the country with commitment and distinction,” he said.
Waweru’s swearing-in comes after one of the most closely watched parliamentary by-elections in Kenya, with the outcome viewed by political observers as a significant indicator of shifting alliances ahead of the 2027 polls.
