NAIROBI, Kenya- Detectives have arrested a 26-year-old man suspected of fatally attacking US national Osman Aweys Abdi during a robbery in Garissa in May.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) identified the suspect as Muhiyadin Abdi Sheikh.
It said detectives from DCI Garissa traced him to a hideout in Kabete, Nairobi, after several months of investigations and arrested him.
He is being held at Kasarani Police Station pending transfer to Garissa, where he is expected to face murder charges.
The charges have not yet been filed in court.
What happened in Garissa
Abdi was attacked on May 28 near Abubeida School in Bulla Mzuri, about five kilometres north of Iftin Police Station, according to the DCI.
He suffered a stab wound to his left thigh and an injury to the left side of his head, which detectives said was caused by a blunt object.
His mobile phone was also stolen.
Earlier reporting on the incident identified Abdi as a Somali-American and said his brother was alerted by a caller who had obtained his number from the victim.
His brother found him injured and took him to Antalya Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
His body was later moved to Garissa County Teaching and Referral Hospital pending a postmortem examination, as detectives began investigating the killing.
Suspect went into hiding, DCI says
The DCI said the suspect went into hiding after the attack, prompting detectives to conduct an intelligence-led search.
Investigators eventually traced him to Kabete, where he was arrested.
The DCI said he would be escorted to Garissa as investigations continue. He remains a suspect and is expected to answer to the allegations in court.
