NAIROBI, Kenya- The government has condemned an incident captured in a viral video showing women allegedly assaulting a taxi driver after reportedly refusing to pay for services rendered.
Gender Affairs PS Speaks Out
In a statement issued on December 23, Principal Secretary for the State Department of Gender Affairs, Anne Wang’ombe, described the conduct of the women as unacceptable and a violation of civil society standards.
“We are profoundly disturbed by the viral video depicting several women assaulting a taxi driver and allegedly refusing to pay for services rendered. Such conduct is utterly unacceptable and violates the standards of a civil society,” she said.
The PS further condemned the acts of violence against the driver, stressing that those responsible must face legal consequences.
“The State Department for Gender condemns this act of violence unequivocally. Those responsible must be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law,” she added.
Incident Sparks Public Outcry
The video, widely shared on social media, shows a group of women attacking a taxi driver they had reportedly booked online.
Reports indicate that upon arrival at their destination, the women refused to pay and proceeded to assault the driver, who attempted to defend himself.
The incident has triggered strong reactions online, with many Kenyans calling for justice and accountability.
PS Wang’ombe urged the driver to reach out to the Ministry of Gender, Culture and Children Services for support.
She also appealed to members of the public with information about the incident or the identities of those involved to contact the State Department through the toll-free helpline 1195 or via direct message.
Authorities have pledged to investigate the matter and ensure those responsible are held accountable.
