NAIROBI, Kenya – The Ministry of Education has dismissed recent reports suggesting that boarding fees for public senior secondary schools are set to rise.
Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba clarified that the claims are false, urging parents not to pay any additional charges.
“Parents, learners, and the general public are hereby notified that there has been no revision of boarding fees, or any other fees, payable by learners,” CS Ogamba said.
He confirmed that the annual boarding fee will remain Ksh 22,244 per learner, with any extra costs being covered by the government.
“The Government will continue to fulfil its constitutional duty of providing capitation for learners in senior school,” he added.
Earlier reports had suggested that fees could jump to Ksh 53,554 per student from January 2026, affecting some schools in Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu.
The reports also claimed that certain schools had already implemented the increase due to financial challenges.
The Ministry emphasized that the standardization of fees across public boarding schools, which had removed categorization based on infrastructure and location, remains intact.
This clarification comes ahead of the transition from junior to senior school curriculum following the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) exams under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
