NAIROBI, Kenya – A leading human rights organization has threatened to take legal action against Kenya’s electoral and anti-corruption agencies over what it calls “systemic failures” during the recent by-elections.
Vocal Africa claims the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) failed to act decisively against officials who allegedly violated electoral laws, compromising the integrity of the polls.
Speaking at a media briefing on Wednesday, Vocal Africa’s Executive Director Khalid Hussein said the group will initiate court proceedings 14 days after the briefing if the authorities do not respond adequately.
Hussein also called for the resignation of Cabinet Secretaries and other state officers accused of campaigning for government-allied candidates, describing such actions as “a breach of the principle of neutrality in public office.”
The rights organization highlighted widespread reports of violence, voter intimidation, and bribery during the by-elections.
According to Hussein, inaction by the IEBC and EACC sends a dangerous signal and could risk “plunging the country into chaos ahead of the 2027 general elections.”
Vocal Africa urged both agencies to uphold the rule of law and ensure accountability, warning that public trust in the electoral process is at stake if violations go unchecked.
