TEHRAN, Iran — Iran publicly executed a man convicted of raping two women in the northern province of Semnan, the judiciary announced on Tuesday.
The execution took place in Bastam after the Supreme Court upheld the death sentence, according to the judiciary’s official outlet, Mizan Online.
Provincial judiciary head Mohammad Akbari said the ruling was “confirmed and enforced after precise review by the Supreme Court.”
Authorities said the convict had deceived the victims and committed the rapes using force, coercion, intimidation, and threats, exploiting fears of reputational harm. The man’s identity and sentencing date were not disclosed.
Public executions in Iran are rare, with most hangings carried out in prisons.
The punishment follows a public execution two weeks ago of a man convicted of murder. Iran, which executes most convicts by hanging, is the world’s second most prolific executioner after China, according to rights groups including Amnesty International.
