Nyandarua Senator John Methu Named DCP Secretary General Designate

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — Nyandarua Senator John Methu has been named the Secretary General designate of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), further cementing his position as one of the key figures in the emerging opposition outfit ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Methu, a vocal ally of Gachagua and one of the fiercest critics of President William Ruto’s administration, is expected to formally assume the role as DCP continues to strengthen its structures across the country.

The youthful senator has in recent months become a prominent face of the party, accompanying Gachagua in political rallies, diaspora engagements and grassroots mobilisation campaigns targeting the Mt Kenya region and beyond.

According to reports, the DCP leadership lineup places Gachagua as party leader, with former UDA Secretary General Cleophas Malala serving as deputy party leader while Kajiado Senator Seki Lenku takes up the national chairperson position.

Methu’s elevation is viewed as a strategic move by Gachagua to energise youthful supporters and consolidate influence in the Mt Kenya region, where political realignments have intensified following the former Deputy President’s impeachment and fallout with President Ruto.

The Nyandarua senator has consistently defended Gachagua and positioned himself at the centre of the opposition’s “Wantam” narrative aimed at unseating the Kenya Kwanza administration in 2027.

Speaking during recent engagements in the United Kingdom alongside Gachagua, Methu vowed to help DCP secure key by-election victories and expand the party’s national appeal.

Political analysts say Methu’s appointment signals DCP’s intention to build a younger and more aggressive political machinery capable of challenging established parties in the next election cycle.

The development also highlights growing cracks within the ruling coalition as more leaders associated with the Kenya Kwanza alliance continue gravitating towards alternative political formations aligned to Gachagua and the opposition.
