NAIROBI, Kenya- Manyatta MP John Mukunji has demanded an impartial investigation into the deadly violence at Nembure Grounds while accusing security agencies of intimidating him and members of his family.
Through Ndegwa & Ndegwa Advocates, the lawmaker wrote to Inspector-General of Police Douglas Kanja and Director of Criminal Investigations Mohamed Amin seeking clarification on whether he is being pursued over the incident.
The September 15 letter followed remarks by Government Spokesperson Charles Owino indicating that police were looking for Mukunji in connection with the violence during a United Democratic Alliance delegates’ meeting.
His lawyers said Owino’s statement contradicted an earlier position attributed to Police Spokesperson Michael Muchiri that the MP was not being pursued.
“Our client is therefore left in a state of complete and justified bewilderment as to which of the two conflicting positions is the official and truthful stance of the State,” lawyer Ndegwa Njiru said.
The legal team said the differing public statements had caused Mukunji and his family anxiety and uncertainty.
Mukunji distanced himself from the violence and condemned the deaths and destruction of property reported during the meeting.
He called on the National Police Service to conduct what his lawyers described as a transparent and independent investigation free from political interference and selective prosecution.
The letter also asked investigators to establish who fired the shots during the violence and whether any orders to use lethal force had been issued.
Mukunji’s lawyers made allegations against Deputy President Kithure Kindiki over the shooting, but the letter did not provide evidence establishing that he issued such an order.
Kindiki had not publicly responded to the accusation by the time of publication.
The MP said he was willing to cooperate with any lawful investigation but warned against attempts to frame him or make him a scapegoat.
“Our client remains steadfastly committed to the due process of the law and to full cooperation with any lawful and impartial investigation,” the letter stated.
His lawyers further demanded an immediate end to what they described as surveillance and intimidation targeting the MP’s homestead and his school-going children.
They alleged that unidentified officers had been hovering around or loitering near the home. The National Police Service had not publicly responded to the allegations.
The law firm directed police and the DCI to send any summons or official correspondence relating to Mukunji through its designated email address.
It warned that continued violation of the legislator’s rights or those of his family would result in legal action.
Violence erupted at Nembure Grounds in Embu County during a UDA delegates’ meeting on September 12, leaving people dead and several others injured.
Vehicles and other property were also destroyed.
The DCI has since announced several arrests and said investigations are continuing to identify other people suspected of participating in or organising the violence.
