NAIROBI, Kenya- The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has secured the conviction of three prison officers from GK Kamiti Maximum Security Prison for their role in aiding the escape of terrorist inmates in 2021.
Delivering judgment at the Kahawa Law Courts, Senior Principal Magistrate Boaz Ombewa ruled that the escape was “clearly well-planned” and must have taken a considerable amount of time to execute.
The convicted officers are Robert Kipkirui Soi, Kaikai Talengo Moses, and Willy Wambua.
The court found them guilty of various offences including neglect of official duty, aiding prisoners’ escape, and organising a meeting in support of a terrorist group.
According to the prosecution, the officers aided the escape of Musharaf Abdala, also known by several aliases including Shukri, Sharif, Alex Shikanda and Rashid Swaitar, Mohamed Ali Abikar, and Joseph Juma Odhiambo on the night of November 14, 2021, and the morning of November 15, 2021.

The escaped inmates were serving sentences for terrorism-related offences at the time.
The court established that on the night of the escape, Soi and Talengo, while serving as Kenya Prisons Service officers, wilfully neglected their official duties and failed to prevent the escape of the convicted prisoners.
Wambua was separately convicted of aiding a prison escape and organising a meeting in support of a terrorist group.
Prosecutors told the court that Wambua facilitated the movement of Abdul Majid Yassin from Cell No. 2 to Cell No. 6 at Condemned Block “A,” where a meeting involving four convicted terror inmates was held, in contravention of the Prevention of Terrorism Act, 2012.
The prosecution team, led by Principal Prosecution Counsels James Machirah and Kennedy Amwayi, called 14 witnesses, successfully proving the case beyond reasonable doubt.
The matter will proceed to sentencing on January 20, 2026.
