Inspector Kenneth Sang Arrested in Mbobu and Mutiso Murder Probe

Inspector Kenneth Kipkemboi Sang, a police officer sought in connection with the murders of lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu and Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso, has been arrested in Eldoret, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said on Saturday.

The DCI said detectives from its headquarters acted on intelligence that led them to Sang in Eldoret town, Uasin Gishu County.

He was intercepted along Uganda Road in the central business district while driving a silver Toyota Fielder, registration number KCM 508L.

According to the DCI, Sang had been on the run and was trying to sell the car to raise money for his upkeep.

He was taken to Eldoret Police Station for processing as investigators prepare for his arraignment, the agency said.

The DCI statement did not specify when he would appear in court or what charges he would face.

The arrest brings into custody a suspect investigators had previously linked to both murder investigations.

In September, the DCI named Sang as a coordinator in the operation connected to Mbobu’s killing and said he was also suspected of coordinating with a person already in custody in the Mutiso case.

Two killings under investigation

Mbobu, a prominent Nairobi lawyer and former chairperson of the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal, was shot dead on September 9, 2025.

He was attacked while driving along Magadi Road in Nairobi.

The DCI described the killing as a targeted attack.

The investigation later widened after detectives arrested other suspects and examined possible links between Mbobu’s killing and the murder of Mutiso.

In September, the DCI said forensic examination had linked a firearm issued to a police officer to the shooting that killed Mbobu.

The agency also identified Sang as a suspect allegedly involved in coordinating the operation.

Mutiso, a clinical psychologist and mental health researcher, was shot dead in Upper Hill, Nairobi, on July 29, 2026, while travelling in a vehicle.

Before her death, she had reported an earlier incident in which armed men confronted her near Junction Mall along Ngong Road.

The DCI previously said that Sang acted as a link between people suspected of financing the attack on Mutiso and the team that carried it out.

Investigators also said the firearm used in her killing had been issued to him.

Several other people have been arrested or named in connection with the two cases.

In the Mutiso investigation, prosecutors have pursued murder charges against multiple suspects, including people alleged to have financed, planned or carried out the attack.

Investigators pursuing further leads

The DCI said detectives are continuing to follow leads to establish the full circumstances of the killings and determine whether other people were involved.

Sang’s arrest may help investigators question him about the links between the two cases and the events leading to each killing.

Other suspects in the Mbobu murder case include Rose Mbithe Mulwa, her children Chris and Angela Mulwa, and police constables Julius Kipkoech Cheruiyot and Kennedy Kipkemei Borboroi, against whom the DPP approved murder charges.

The two officers appeared before the High Court in Kibera on October 8 but did not enter pleas, pending mental assessments ordered by the court.

The three civilian suspects were already in custody and also face charges in the separate murder case involving Dr Victoria Mutiso.

The five are expected to return to court on October 27 for plea-taking, subject to the officers’ assessment reports.
