NAIROBI, Kenya- The Luhya Elders Forum has endorsed Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna for the presidency, adding momentum to calls for the ODM politician to fly the community’s flag in the 2027 General Election.
The endorsement comes amid growing political realignments in Western Kenya, where a section of Luhya leaders and elders have been rallying behind Sifuna as a potential presidential candidate.
Speaking on behalf of the forum, the elders declared their support for Sifuna’s presidential ambitions, saying they believe he is well-positioned to lead the country.
Their backing follows a series of meetings in which the community has discussed its political direction and the need to unite behind a single candidate.
The endorsement builds on earlier positions taken by the Luhya Elders Forum, which has consistently defended Sifuna during internal ODM disputes.
Earlier this year, the elders publicly opposed attempts to remove him from key party leadership positions, arguing that he deserved the community’s full support.
According to reports, leaders allied to the Linda Mwananchi movement have also backed Sifuna as the Luhya community’s preferred presidential flagbearer.
During a strategy meeting in Kitale, they resolved to support his bid while naming Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya to coordinate political activities across the Western region.
Former Westlands MP Fred Gumo has also thrown his weight behind Sifuna, urging other senior Luhya leaders to support the Nairobi senator’s presidential ambitions rather than pursue separate bids.
The endorsement is expected to intensify political discussions within the Western region as leaders seek to consolidate support ahead of the 2027 elections.
While Sifuna has increasingly been presented by his supporters as a possible presidential contender, Kenya’s political landscape remains fluid, with parties and alliances still taking shape ahead of the next General Election.
