Former Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has launched a thinly veiled attack on the ruling political establishment, comparing the coalition’s growing internal divisions to the final moments aboard the ill-fated Titanic.
In a post shared on X on Friday, Kuria painted a picture of a political leadership consumed by internal battles despite what he suggested was an obvious political crisis facing the government.
Using the Titanic disaster as a metaphor, Kuria argued that while the “ship” had already struck an iceberg and was inevitably sinking, some leaders remained preoccupied with power struggles instead of confronting the looming challenges.
“The Movie is THE TITANIC. The ship has hit the iceberg. Water levels are near full inside the ship. It’s clear to all it’s headed to the bottom of the sea. The passengers are prepared for the worst. Even the rats are scampering for safety and looking for an exit,” Kuria wrote.
He went on to suggest that only two groups appeared unaware of the unfolding crisis.
“BUT. Two groups remained oblivious. The band continued playing the music like nothing was happening. And… wives of the nobles and the rich were still quarrelling loudly about who would sit on the front row.”
Although Kuria did not mention individuals by name, political observers interpreted the remarks as a criticism of the escalating rivalry within the ruling coalition, where competition over influence, Cabinet positions and succession politics has intensified ahead of the 2027 General Election.
His reference to leaders “quarrelling about who would sit on the front row” has been widely viewed as an indictment of politicians accused of prioritising personal ambitions over governance and responding to public concerns.
The remarks come at a time when tensions within the broader Kenya Kwanza-ODM political arrangement continue to dominate national political discourse.
ODM has recently hardened its stance on any potential 2027 electoral pact with President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA), declaring that the deputy president’s position would be non-negotiable and demanding an equal share of government.
Speaking during the party’s delegates’ meeting in Turkana on Wednesday, ODM Deputy Party Leader Simba Arati insisted the party would not surrender the running mate slot to UDA, arguing that it has several leaders qualified to deputise President Ruto should the parties formally work together.
Arati cited Energy Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya, Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga and ODM leader Oburu Odinga among those capable of occupying the country’s second-highest office, adding that the party would determine its preferred candidate internally.
Kuria’s latest comments add to the growing public debate over the stability of the ruling coalition as political realignments and succession calculations gather momentum ahead of the next election cycle.
