NAIROBI, Kenya — Several families in Mukuru Fuata Nyayo Village, South B Ward, Nairobi County, were left counting their losses after a fire destroyed multiple properties on Thursday morning.
Witnesses reported that the fire erupted around 2 a.m., causing massive structural damage in the area. It is believed to have started in one building before quickly spreading to neighbouring structures during the early hours.
Initial efforts by residents to contain the blaze were unsuccessful, prompting them to alert the Nairobi County government. Firefighters from Nairobi City County and the Rescue Services Team later arrived, extinguishing the fire, which had already consumed several buildings.
Footage showed thick clouds of smoke enveloping the area, with some residents attempting to salvage their belongings, while others looked on helplessly as the fire intensified.
At the time of reporting, no casualties or injuries had been confirmed.
This incident comes weeks after a devastating fire in Garissa on October 27, which destroyed numerous structures in a busy refugee camp market.
The blaze, which began at around 11:40 a.m., rapidly engulfed shops, pharmacies, restaurants, and other commercial establishments. The Kenya Red Cross helped bring the fire under control, but traders are still tallying their losses.
The recent spate of fires highlights ongoing concerns over fire safety and emergency response capacity in Kenya’s urban and rural communities.
