NAIROBI, Kenya- The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has suffered another political setback after Ewuaso Oonkindongi MCA Joseph Ole Torris defected to the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Announcing the defection on Monday, Gachagua welcomed the Narok MCA into DCP, saying the move reflected the growing popularity of the party ahead of the 2027 General Election.
“I am delighted to receive the Ewuaso Oonkindongi MCA, Hon. Joseph Ole Torris, into our party, DCP,” Gachagua said in a statement.
According to the DCP leader, Torris was elected on an ODM ticket but had chosen to join DCP after listening to the wishes of his constituents.
“He was elected on an ODM ticket, but he has obeyed the wishes of his people to defend his seat on a DCP ticket in August 2027,” Gachagua said.
The former Deputy President described DCP as “the party of the moment and the future,” expressing confidence that it would play a key role in reshaping Kenya’s political landscape and strengthening its support within the Maa community.
Gachagua said the party had been embraced as the political vehicle that would champion the interests of the Maa Nation while promoting development across the country.
He pledged that a DCP government would deliberately integrate communities that he said had been marginalized since independence into the mainstream of government through affirmative interventions aimed at accelerating development.
“The future is Green,” Gachagua declared, referencing DCP’s party colours.
The defection adds to a series of political realignments as parties position themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election, with DCP continuing its efforts to expand its influence beyond its traditional support base.
ODM had not immediately responded to the latest defection at the time of publication.
