NAIROBI, Kenya- The Panel of Experts on Compensation of Victims of Human Rights Violations has processed 259 claims under Phase VI of its compensation programme, with the claims carrying a combined value of Sh83.65 million.
The panel said the phase covers civilians and uniformed officers who suffered human rights violations, including during demonstrations and public protests.
Its update, issued on Thursday, October 8, lists claims for aggravated, severe, moderate and minor injuries, as well as economic losses.
Seven aggravated injury claims account for Sh13.5 million, with individual amounts ranging from Sh1.5 million to Sh2.5 million.
The panel listed Sh35 million for 35 severe injury claims, Sh27 million for 54 moderate injury claims and Sh6.65 million for 133 minor injury claims.
Another 30 claims for economic loss account for Sh1.5 million. The panel’s statement gives the total compensation quantum as Sh83.65 million.
The update does not say the Phase VI amounts have been paid.
It says each claim is subject to verification and authentication and that claimants will be notified of the outcome in due course.
The panel urged victims who have not submitted claims to do so through its official channels.
It said it would continue engaging with victims and beneficiaries to address concerns and provide updates.
As of September 15, the panel had reported processing 1,083 claims, with total disbursements of about Sh1.014 billion under earlier phases of the programme.
