NAIROBI, Kenya – Beryl Achieng Odinga, the youngest sister of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, has died in Nairobi after a prolonged illness.
Ruth Odinga confirmed that she passed away on Monday at a Nairobi hospital where she had been receiving treatment.
“She died today at a Nairobi hospital where she had been admitted,” the source said, adding that she had battled illness for an extended period and had been in and out of hospital.
A family source revealed that Beryl had at one point been admitted to the same Indian medical facility where Raila Odinga received treatment earlier this year.
Although born into one of Kenya’s most prominent political families, Beryl kept a modest public profile and stayed away from mainstream politics, unlike some of her siblings.
Beryl made history in Zimbabwe when she became the first Black Town Clerk of Mutare, the country’s third-largest city.
A trained administrator, she later returned to Kenya and continued her work in public service.
In 2020, she was appointed Chairperson of the Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company (NWSC), where she served in a leadership capacity within the water sector.
Despite her family’s political clout, Beryl Achieng Odinga built a reputation as a dedicated professional who contributed to governance and public institutions in Kenya and the region.
Funeral arrangements will be communicated by the family.
