12 Killed, 309 Injured in Riyadh Airport Attack

Date:

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia- At least 12 people were killed and 309 injured in an attack on King Khalid International Airport in Saudi Arabia’s capital, the country’s civil aviation authority said.

The dead included four Saudi citizens and eight foreign nationals: two Bangladeshis and one citizen each from the United States, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Palestine and Sudan.

Some of the injured were in critical condition and were receiving treatment in hospitals, the authority said.

A missile struck an airport complex housing Terminals 3 and 4, which serve domestic flights, a regional official told The Associated Press.

Airport operations were suspended as authorities assessed the damage and checked the safety of its facilities.

The attack was the latest in a series of strikes on the airport this week.

Earlier attacks killed people and damaged a commercial aircraft on the ground, according to Reuters.

Airlines have cancelled or diverted flights, while some foreign governments have urged their citizens to avoid the airport.

The Saudi-led military coalition blamed Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels for Saturday’s attack and vowed to respond.

The Houthis had not claimed responsibility for the latest strike at the time of reporting, Reuters said.

The airport attack comes amid renewed fighting in Yemen.

A ceasefire between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis unravelled this year, while Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces have been fighting to regain territory seized by the rebels.

US President Donald Trump said Washington was considering joining Saudi strikes against the Houthis.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the strike, saying attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure violate international law and must stop, Reuters reported.
