NAIROBI, Kenya- President William Samoei Ruto has directed that the Shauri Moyo Estate housing project be renamed Johana Ng’eno Boma Yangu Housing Estate in honour of the late Johana Ng’eno for his role in advancing Kenya’s affordable housing programme.
The announcement was made during Ng’eno’s burial on Friday, where the President paid tribute to the former Emurua Dikirr Constituency Member of Parliament, describing him as a key figure in championing the government’s housing agenda.
According to Ruto, the decision recognises Ng’eno’s leadership as chairperson of the National Assembly’s Departmental Committee on Housing, Urban Planning and Public Works, where he played a central role in steering the ambitious housing programme despite political resistance.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Head of State directed the Ministry of Housing to formally implement the change.
“Because Johana Ng’eno was the chairman who ensured that we succeeded in the housing project… I am directing the Ministry of Housing to rename Shauri Moyo to Johana Ng’eno Boma Yangu Estate,” Ruto said.
The President said the move was meant to permanently recognise Ng’eno’s contribution to the country’s housing transformation, noting that the lawmaker stood firmly behind the programme when many leaders opposed it.
Ng’eno, a three-term MP who represented Emurua Dikirr, died on 28 February 2026 in a helicopter crash in Nandi County that also claimed five other lives.
The renaming of the estate is expected to immortalise his legacy in the government’s Boma Yangu Affordable Housing Programme, one of the flagship projects of the Kenya Kwanza administration.
The housing project in Shauri Moyo is among the largest urban affordable housing developments in Nairobi and forms part of a broader national plan to increase access to decent and affordable homes.
