SIAYA, Kenya— Authorities have launched a manhunt and internal investigation after six suspects facing robbery with violence charges escaped from the Siaya Law Courts on Monday, triggering concerns over courtroom security and police accountability.
The suspects — Fredrick Wafula, John Ngote, Farid Kimtai, John Okumu, Albert Otieno, and Kevin Otieno — had just appeared before a magistrate when they managed to evade police officers and flee as they were being escorted back to remand.
Confirming the incident, Siaya County Police Commander Serah Koki stated that 12 officers who were on duty at the time are currently being interrogated to determine how the escape occurred.
“We are treating this as a serious security lapse. All officers involved are being questioned, and efforts are ongoing to recapture the fugitives,” said Commander Koki.
The circumstances of the escape remain unclear, but early reports suggest the suspects may have taken advantage of a chaotic transfer process or exploited lax supervision.
The Siaya Police Department has not ruled out the possibility of internal collusion.
The six suspects were being held on charges related to violent robberies, a category of crime that carries serious penalties under Kenyan law.
Their disappearance has alarmed residents and renewed calls for better coordination between court officials and law enforcement officers during high-risk prisoner transfers.
The incident adds to a growing list of security breaches in court environments across the country, prompting legal analysts and civil society groups to call for urgent reforms to prevent future escapes.
Meanwhile, police have urged members of the public to report any sightings of the escapees and warned that the individuals may be dangerous.
The investigation continues as officers work to determine whether standard operating procedures were followed and if disciplinary action will be taken against those found culpable.
